Consultation and Brief: This 1940’s pebble-dash rendered North London property had a back garden that was tired and outdated.

Access into the garden from the front of the house was through a built-in garage and then along a side passage. At the initial client consultation, it was clear that the terracing outside the back of the house was not working. The steps were awkward, uneven and their layout was not making the most of the space. The garden was uninspired, drab and lacked vibrancy.

The clients wanted an inviting terrace to entertain friends and family; and also needed a way to link the house to their newly installed modern cedar-clad outdoor room. A contemporary design with rustic overtones was the overall feel that the clients were after.

Garden Design Implementation:

The design featured two new raised terraces. The first terrace was along the side return and a raised bed was built to the length of the building.
The steps down to the main terrace were reconfigured and the old hazardous, crazy paving was removed and replaced.
The main terrace steps extending down into the garden and towards the garden room were repositioned and widened creating a more natural flow between each zone.
Two large feature retaining beds either side of the steps were created for mixed herbaceous planting.

Materials:

Materials were chosen for their ability to be both contemporary and rustic in appearance.
A riven grey sandstone was used for both the cladding and coping stones on the retaining beds. The riven grey sandstone was also used on the main patios as a way to frame the central charcoal grey clay paver patio areas.
A stepping stone path was laid through the lawn to the rear.
Raised sleeper beds were built and planted with a mix of perennials and shrubs.
The garden room is screened from the rest of the garden with beech hedging.

Planting:

The planting throughout the garden is vibrant and colourful.

Feature bed plants include those that attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Herbaceous: Salvia, Rudbeckia, Hemerocallis, Crocosmia Geranium, Veronicastrum
Grasses: Hakonechloa, Pennisetum and Miscanthus.
Shrubs: Pittosporum, Lavandula, Hydrangea, Cotinus and Cornus.
