Multi-award winning small family garden for play and entertaining.
Location: Kew, London TW9
Small Urban Back Garden 150 sq m
Consultation and Brief: The house is semi-detached, Victorian and situated in a conservation area close to Kew garden. Both the front and back gardens were run down and uninspired. The back garden was very overgrown, bland and with a confused functionality. The clients weren’t really using their outdoor space. They wanted a private retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city living. The garden had to be low maintenance and contemporary.
Entertaining friends and family was crucial to the design. They were also keen to create a fun and special place for the children. Water was another component that was at the top of their wish list. The clients also wanted to be able to use the space at night and requested lighting and outdoor heating.
They also required a lot of storage. The clients enjoyed cooking and wanted an area dedicated to herbs. They also love Mediterranean planting and are attracted to plants within the cool colour palette, particularly blue.
Garden Design Implementation:
Materials were brought in via a side gate and then through the kitchen. We removed the old rotten decking and were left with a void that needed to be filled in and raised to meet the internal floor level. Plank paving was laid to create continuity with the wood floor interior.
The clients wanted a lot of outside storage so we created bespoke cupboards. We also designed and built a bespoke play den for their two sons. The den had a balcony and ladders to the front and side; and was finished with a green roof.
A separate entertaining space for the adults was built within a chunky pergola structure and hardwood deck. The bespoke built in benches were designed with further storage underneath. Other elements to this design included a bespoke water tank and exterior heating.
Materials:
Kebony decking, Cedar trellising, Cedar pergola frame, Cedar den structure, Kebony benches, sawn and sand blasted buff sandstone plank paving (sealed), treated graded softwood timber cupboards, steel water tank with filter and pump, stainless steel trellis cabling, Hunza lights with dimmers, outdoor heaters.
Planting:
Trees: Laurus nobilis, Olea europaea
Shrubs & Climbers: Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary), Buxus balls, Lavandula angustifolia, Buxus hedging, Lonicera henryi, Trachelospermum, Clematis ‘Prince Charles’
Grasses & Ferns: Luzula nivea, Miscanthus
Perennials: Agapanthus, Echinacea, Agastache, Salvia, Helichrysum, Geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue,’ Alchemilla mollis, Stachys ‘Big Ears’, Thymus, (Thyme) Origanum, (Marjoram) Tiarella
