  • A contemporary terraced garden design in Leytonstone, near Wanstead, London E11, by professional landscapers Landspace.

Leybourne Road – Wanstead E11

A multi-functional, terraced, medium sized family garden. Contemporary in style.

Location: Leybourne Road, Leytonstone E11

Medium sized back garden 200 sq m

Consultation and Brief: The client had previously cleared the garden and it had been unused for some time.

The access through the house was going to be tricky and ultimately this would determine some of the design decisions from the outset.

A slope through the garden also dictated the direction that the design would take. The logistics of both the access and the levels in this outdoor space meant that compromises had to be made if the project was going to come in on budget.

Raised, retaining oak sleeper beds and evergreen, low-maintenance planting frame the raised sundeck.

Garden Design Implementation:

The sloped garden was terraced into three distinct areas.
A ground level dining/seating patio area closest to the house and kitchen was built with steps leading up to a central lawn. The seating area comprised of bespoke, Kebony benches with integral storage. The ground level patio was laid with porcelain tiles and the retaining beds and steps were clad in sandstone.

On the first level raised sleeper beds were built around the lawn and planted with evergreen, low maintenance planting.

The second level consisted of a raised Kebony sundeck and oak sleeper retaining beds planted with three Silver birch trees for privacy. The trees were underplanted with low maintenance planting. It was an extremely hot time of the year during the build so the team had to work under tents and take plenty of water breaks. The outcome was a great success.

A garden with 3 level changes. Porcelain tiles, steps and Kebony benches with integral storage make up the main area directly from the house and kitchen.

Materials:

Porcelain tiles, sandstone, Kebony decking, oak sleepers, Larch screening, Hunza lighting and micro-drip irrigation system.

The upper terrace including decking and Oak sleeper retaining beds. Plants grown at deck level to keep the space open.
