Elfort Road – Highbury, Islington N5

Small contemporary garden, designed for leisure and entertaining. Divided by raised beds and softened with stunning Mediterranean planting.

Location: Elfort Road, Highbury N5

Small Urban Garden 100 sq m

Consultation and Brief: The property is a townhouse in North London; and the clients are both working professionals with two teenage sons.

They had recently completed a new extension that spanned the width of their wide garden. At the time of our meeting the outdoor space consisted of, a dated rockery, crumbling raised beds and a balding muddy, grassless lawn.

The clients are both keen on fitness and wanted a space for their sports equipment.
They also required a separate space to entertain and a shed for storage. They wanted the lawn removed to utilise as much space as possible.

The north London client required a low-maintenance garden makeover featuring a space for sports equipment, a leisure area in which to entertain and a shed for storage.

Garden Design Implementation:

The garden was cleverly divided by centrally placing a raised bed within the space. A raised bed was also built to the rear of the garden. Other areas were left as ground level beds so that the planting could spill over onto the path edges.

Contrasting materials were chosen to break-up the hard landscaping and to designate garden zones.

The resulting courtyard space that we created is now contemporary, functional and fresh.

Raised beds clad in sawn sandstone and Vande Moortel ‘Titan' pavers divide the garden into zones.

Materials:

Vande Moortel Titan clay pavers, buff sandstone paving, Hunza lighting, Claber micro-drip irrigation, Larch screening.

Stipa, Melica, Miscanthus and Luzula create a foil for other plants such as Agapanthus and Gaura. The fine texture of the grasses contrasts with the course textures of the Paeonia and Hydrangea.

Planting:

Shrubs and climbers: Sarcococca confusa, Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’, Lavandula ‘Edelweiss’, Hydrangea anomala, Akebia quinata, Rosa ‘Wollerton Old Hall’, Trachelospermum jasminoides.

Grasses: Melica atropurpurea, Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’, Stipa tenuissima, Luzula nivea.

Perennials: Paeonia, Agapanthus africanus, Libertia grandiflora, Gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies’, Salvia ‘Caradonna’, Salvia ‘Schneegal’, Alchemilla mollis, Geranium ‘Dreamland’.

“We had a great experience working with Landspace. We were taken through design options and have ended up with exactly what we wanted. The work was complicated as everything had to go through our house including huge amounts of excavated earth rubble and rubbish but all done with minimum inconvenience.”

“Seb and the team very responsive to what we wanted as the project was delivered. We are absolutely delighted with the finished product as the garden develops this spring. Low maintenance and a great outdoor room.”
