Copers Cope Road – Beckenham BR3

Large, contemporary, award winning project with
traditional garden style planting and Victorian greenhouse.

Location:Copers Cope Road, Beckenham BR3

Large size rear and front garden 500 sq m

Consultation and Brief: The clients contacted us having seen a feature in Homes and Gardens magazine entitled ‘Cabin Fever’.

They had liked the children’s den that we had custom-made. It was part of our award winning garden project, Priory Road. They were about to undergo a total refurbishment of their double fronted Victorian villa in Beckenham; and they were keen to include a complete redesign of their garden.

Both the clients are consultant doctors and gardening is a way for them to unwind – describing themselves as “enthusiastic gardeners”. Their wish list was for a large area to entertain, a plot for a kitchen garden, privacy from neighbours at the rear of the garden, a lawn area for their sons to play, a water feature and cottage style planting that included roses.

The garden design not only compliments the contemporary extension but links the garden to the Victorian architecture with its traditional glass house and rose walk.

Garden Design Implementation:

The new extension has a modern kitchen and dining area; and the back garden is accessed through its stunning, feature Crittall doors. These doors also frame the view into the outdoor space so played an important role when considering the design.

Creating continuity from the interior to the outside and relating it back to the architecture was important. Placing focal points to draw the eye towards whilst at the same time leading the gaze away from structures such as sheds was a balancing act. There was a lot to fit in. Dividing the garden into zones helped to make the space feel larger.

To tackle their privacy issue at the rear of the garden we planted pleached hedging. We also created a rose walk along the side of the kitchen garden; and incorporated a water feature in the main terrace bed and surrounded it with mixed herbaceous planting.

Side terrace and Victorian glass roof veranda. Grey sawn sandstone bull-nosed steps, lead from the Victorian glass roof veranda to a spacious patio for entertaining.

Materials:

For the main patio areas we used grey riven sandstone edged with granite setts. For the paths around the greenhouse and raised bed we used self-binding gravel.

The grey riven sandstone patio contrasts well with the grey bricks of the new extension.

Planting:

The planting style was based loosely on an English cottage style garden with a contemporary twist. The planting was also divided into zones and each quarter had a theme but with a narrative that threaded the areas together.
Shrubs: Hydrangea, Philladelphus, Lavander, Rosmary, Pittosporum, Hebe
Climbers: Honeysuckle, Climbing roses, Jasmine, Hydrangea.
Perennials: Main beds and rose walk – Paeonia, Geranium, Selinum, Salvia, Nepeta, Campanula, Gaura, Agapanthus, Phlox, Miscanthus, Hakonechloa
