A small terraced, family garden with bespoke play den and pergola.
Location: Prebend Street, Islington N1
Small basement and upper terrace garden 150 sq m
Consultation and Brief:
The property is a lovely terraced Islington town house. Access into the garden is restricted through the basement of the house. The clients have a young child and are both busy working professionals. They required a space that would be safe and functional.
The entrance into their garden is through French doors that lead into a small shady lower terrace. The steps from this lower ground level up into the main garden were hazardous and required some configuring.
Garden Design Implementation:
Thinking about how the clients want to use the space is the best starting point for any design. The clients wanted to be able to entertain their friends but also needed an area for their child to play.
There was a mature Silver birch tree at the rear of the garden so we suggested creating a child’s den around it. Closer to the house we created a patio area with bespoke built-in benches. A pergola and some slatted fencing was erected to give the clients a sense of seclusion. The shady lower ground level was repaved and the position and width of the steps altered.
To brighten up an otherwise dark and gloomy space we painted the wall off-white and placed planters either side of the steps, planting them with shade tolerant plants.
Other work included building raised sleeper beds and a raised platform deck with steps around the Birch tree and play den.
Materials:
Reclaimed Yorkstone paving, Kebony benches, Cedar slatted fences, and Oak sleepers.
Basement area: Grey sandstone and grey sandstone bullnosed steps, terrazzo planters.
Planting:
Shrubs: Hebe ‘Majorie, Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’, Lavandula angustifolia
Grasses and Ferns: Anemanthele lessoniana, Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, Carex ‘Ice’, Hakonechloa macra, Dryopteris Felix-mas
Perennials: Veronicastrum, Tiarella, Bergenia ‘Bressingham White’, Astrantia, Salvia, Liriope muscari

“Our family has been spending every day in our beautiful new garden since the amazing transformation performed by Landspace Design last month. Not only were the final results of the significant overhaul to our garden truly spectacular, but Seb and his team were a delight to work with. The team always showed up on time, they left everything tidy in the evenings and over the weekends and they were pleasant to deal with. They even went out of their way to help our neighbor with her outside drains when she was desperate after a flooding.
The whole process was transparent and professional. The initial plans and associated estimates were comprehensive. Seb was collaborative and flexible when we went through and adjusted the initial proposal and there were no hidden costs – even when there were a couple of plans that needed to be changed as the project progressed. Despite the landscaping, relaying of stonework, treehouse building, bench building, new stairs and drainage and the entire overhaul of our garden, incorporating quite a few different workers (electricians, builders, etc.) and supplies, the work was finished before we anticipated.
Seb kept us informed throughout the entire process, even when we were away from the house for a couple of weeks. When we arrived back to our finished garden, we couldn’t have been happier. We wanted a peaceful place where we were encouraged to spend time in and couldn’t have imagined anything nicer. The garden looks beautiful. We would recommend working with Seb and his team wholeheartedly and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.”
