Small unused space transformed into a low maintenance haven.
Location: Lofting Road, Islington N1
Small Urban Garden 90 sq m
Consultation and Brief: The space was a tiny unloved area at the back of a 1980’s town house in Islington. The clients wanted to extend the inside dining area into the garden.
The interior design of their property has Scandinavian features and they wanted to continue this theme outside. The clients also required a front garden makeover.
Garden Design Implementation:
Simplicity was the key to this design. As their outdoor area was spatially compromised, we took a ‘Less is more’ approach to its layout; stripping away anything that was unnecessary. We wanted an uncluttered courtyard for our clients and chose the best materials to create a light, functional, open, beautiful contemporary, minimalist garden for entertaining.
To make the best use of space we designed and constructed a generously sized built-in L-shaped bench with a slanted high back. The bench is softened by the warmth of the larch screening and is offset by the stunning Aureum clay pavers by Vande Moortel. Bronze-finished spotlights added a sleek finishing touch. The rear garden gate leading to parking at the back was cleverly disguised with Larch.
The planting scheme was minimalist and low maintenance. Plants were chosen for their ability to withstand shade and to offer a long season of interest. Plants that weren’t evergreen had to compensate by offering a deciduous silhouette that lingered into the autumn and beyond like Veronicastrum and Hakonechloa. A stunning multi-stem Acer specimen was chosen as a focal point to draw the eye.
The front garden was also designed as a minimalist space. Clay pavers lead the visitor up to the front door. An eye-catching multi-stem Amelanchier tree framed by gravel and clay pavers creates a strong impression as you walk past on the street. The scheme included south facing mixed herbaceous planting and a lavender scented path.
Materials:
Larch screening, Kebony bench, Vande Moortel Aureum clay pavers.
Planting:
Shrubs: Sarcococca confusa, Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’, Hydrangea ‘Blushing Bride’, Lavandula ‘Little Gem’ Ilex crenata.

“Working with Seb, Kate and the whole team were just fantastic to work with. From the start they provided detailed planning and designs for our front and back gardens. After finding a design and materials we liked, the team set out to build it for us. Everything ran very smoothly, on-time and we are very happy with the result. Terrific work!”
