An awkward space transformed into a stunning inner city, terraced oasis.
Location: Charlotte Terrace, Islington N1
Small sloping urban garden 90 sq m
Consultation and Brief:
This project was carried out during the first wave of the 2019 Coronavirus epidemic. It was a difficult time to be working in the city as stringent PPE had to implemented at all times; and the consultation was carried out at a distance.
Garden makeovers became an essential service during lockdown. It was clear that providing a relaxing place outdoors was hugely beneficial to mental health and wellbeing.
This property is an end of terrace town house with high boundary walls that is overlooked by tall flats and has a side gate onto the street. The space was looking austere and more like a municipal yard. It was definitely not a haven to spend quality time.
The clients required both a space to relax and entertain in. They also needed an area for their large Portuguese water dog to roam! The main priority of this project was to extend the main terrace so that it was large enough to be functional.
Garden Design Implementation:
Initially deliveries to the site were logistically challenging due to shortages but we soon adapted. In order to maximize the outdoor space the steps from the house to street level were moved and the original metal railings were removed.
We constructed a raised deck section beyond the main terrace with an integral raised, retaining, oak sleeper bed to provide a lush screen of planting. On the lower level we created a quiet, secret garden area in the shade.
To increase the privacy from neighbouring flats we fixed screening to the top of the boundary walls; and in the secret garden we built a cantilevered open roof structure between the rear walls with seating underneath.
Materials:
The steps down to the sunken space and surrounding planters were made out of hardwood.
Light sandstone was laid to bring more light into the space and to contrast with the dark hardwood deck components.
Planting:
The planting for this garden had to be robust and low maintenance.
Focal tree: Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’
Shrubs: Pittosporum, Nandina, Lanvandula angustifolia
Climbers: Lonicera periclymenum, Hydrangea anomala.
Grasses: Miscanthus sinensis, Luzula,
Perennials: Libertia, Liriope, Geums, Thymus, Origanum, Erigeron.
