A central London garden of medium size designed for outdoor cooking and children’s play.
Location: Theberton Street, Islington, N1
Small urban back garden 120 sq m
Consultation and Brief: The property is a lovely Georgian town house near to Upper Street in Islington. Before its transformation it had a very unloved garden. The space was littered with odd sections of old paving laid on different levels.
The family required a safe area near the house for their young child. They also wanted a separate adult entertaining area towards the rear of the space. The garden is North-facing and overlooked by flats at the back.
Garden Design Implementation:
The clients liked the arts and crafts classic look of clay pavers. For the adults area we chose a Sepia paver by Vande Moortel laid in a herringbone pattern. The low raised beds were also built using the sepia brick pavers.
The patio was framed with grey sandstone. The same sandstone was used for the step treads.
So that the main patio seating area could be used all year round the pergola was built with a raised waterproofed roof. The pergola was made out of cedar; and larch screening was attached to the boundary walls.
Materials:
Sepia clay pavers, Grey sandstone, Cedar, Larch.
Planting:
Trees: Acer palmatum
Shrubs and Climbers: Sarcococca confusa, Pittosporum tobira ‘Nanum’, Lonicera brownii, Trachelospermum jasminoides, Hydrangea anomala.
Grasses: Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’, Hakonecloa macra, Luzula nivea.
Perennials: Achillea ‘Moonshine’, Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’, Gaura ‘Rosyjane’, Salvia ‘Royal Bumble’, Tellima grandiflora.

“Seb and his team just completed a complete redesign and overhaul of our Islington garden. Entire process was excellent, team was tidy and polite, product was delivered of time and as expected. Further, Seb immediately followed up on, and sorted, a minor issue. As such, great after care support and, for once, a supplier who does what he says he will (when he says he will!). Would very much recommend.”
