A large, contemporary terraced garden, designed to complement a newly refurbished home.
Location: Bromley, BR2
Large size rear and front garden 500 sq m
Consultation and Brief:
The House at Shortlands Grove is a 1930’s detached property. Its front and rear gardens comprised mostly of neglected crazy paving. This made the outdoor spaces look dated and old-fashioned.
The clients were in the process of commencing on an extensive refurbishment and had employed local architects, The Vawdrey. We had previously worked with The Vawdry on the award-winning project, Copers Cope and they had recommended us.
They had designed a modern extension and reconfigured the interior floor plan together with its fixtures and fittings. However, the new internal floor level had been raised; and the new extension now had a drastic drop into the garden.
Garden Design Implementation:
To consolidate the height discrepancy from the internal floor level, we created a spacious outdoor terrace together with large integral beds for mixed herbaceous feature planting. The clients intended to use the kitchen/dining area and immediate outdoor space to entertain so considering the view looking out was crucial.
To the side of the new extension we designed a second, more secluded terrace so that the client could enjoy a morning cup of coffee. This terrace included a raised fishpond, raised beds and a focal tree with under planting.
Materials:
For the main patio, steps and copings we used a grey limestone and for the lower patio a warm dark red clay paver to contrast with the grey.
The front garden used a similar palette for continuity – grey paving for the driveway and the clay pavers for the lavender lined front garden path.
Planting:
The surrounding planting scheme reflected the client’s love of English style gardens with some Mediterranean influences.
Specimen tree: Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’
Shrubs: Hydrangea ‘Strong Annabelle’, Rosa ‘Desdemona’, Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’, Nandina ‘Magical Lemon and Lime’
Grasses: Miscanthus ‘Kleine Silberspinne’, Hakonechloa macra Luzula nivea
Perennials: Paeonia, Veronicastrum, Verbena hastata, Salvia, Campanula ‘Lodden Anna’, Astrantia, Erysimum, Libertia, Geranium, Heuchera,

“The garden has exceeded our expectations and looks amazing. Seb and team did an absolutely fantastic job transforming our front and back garden. Transformed our back garden from a very unloved, unusable jungle into a beautiful functional area that we use all the time. Great use of space creating different areas within the garden. Seb was always very flexible and a genuine pleasure to do business with.
We did extensive research and met a number of landscape designers before selecting Seb. Clear right from the start he was the right person for the job. We could not be happier with the design/build/planting process or end product and cannot recommend Seb and team highly enough.”
Our award-winning landscape garden designers transform outdoor spaces into beautiful places in which to relax & entertain, across Essex, Suffolk, London & the UK.
