A medium sized rear garden designed to soften an unusually curved modern extension.
Location: Caledonian, N1
Medium sized London urban garden 200 sqm.
Consultation and Brief:
The property is a Victorian terrace house located in Islington, London. Before the garden’s redesign it was overgrown and undefined. It was not an enticing space to escape to. The back of the house has a dominating, unusually curved extension and any design needed to consider this.
The client wanted to have a tropically inspired garden which they would feel compelled to sit in and a space that could transport them away from their urban environment. The client also wanted to be able to see through the garden and for the design to be full of plants of varying textures and greens.
Garden Design Implementation:
Thinking about how the clients want to use the space is the best starting point for any design. The clients wanted to be able to entertain their friends but also needed an area for their child to play.
There was a mature Silver birch tree at the rear of the garden so we suggested creating a child’s den around it. Closer to the house we created a patio area with bespoke built-in benches. A pergola and some slatted fencing was erected to give the clients a sense of seclusion. The shady lower ground level was repaved and the position and width of the steps altered.
To brighten up an otherwise dark and gloomy space we painted the wall off-white and placed planters either side of the steps, planting them with shade tolerant plants.
Other work included building raised sleeper beds and a raised platform deck with steps around the Birch tree and play den.

Garden Design Implementation:
This garden was going to be lawn free and was a great opportunity to increase the biodiversity for the local ecological communities.
Three layout sketches were presented to the client. The chosen design used the curved shape of the house extension as its starting point.
Beds were designed to relate to the house and to soften the curved extension. Planting was brought into the central zone of the space by the creation of island beds; and paths meander around these beds to create a sense of space and travel.
Clay pavers were used for the main patio and paths to relate to the victorian bricks of the house.
We were able to save a few of the mature shrubs and climbers.
