St Paul Street – Islington N1

Transforming a dumping-ground into a Scandinavian inspired Paradise.

Location: St Mary’s & St James’ N1

Small Back Garden Terraced Garden 80 sqm

Consultation and Brief:

The property is a typical Victorian mid-terraced house with an extreme level change of 1500mm at the back of the property. The house has a modern basement extension with large paned bi-fold doors that open up onto a small courtyard sized patio. The rest of the outdoor area has been retained and is accessed via steps.

It was an oppressive space which felt more like a dumping ground, lacking greenery and vision. There was not much to it. Two bland levels of composite paving, dirty white rendered walls and a glass balustrade.

The client’s brief was simple. Create a space that they felt excited to be in and happy to invite friends over during the warmer summer months.

A London garden on two awkward levels, turned into a Scandi style dream. Its simplicity of design and natural materials have elevated it into a functional outdoor living space.

Garden Design Implementation:

Sometimes it is better to work with what is there especially when there is a limited budget. Our approach with this project was to improve the existing structures and make additions that would transform the look of this terraced garden. We wanted our client to feel that they were in a different space by creating an environment that was unique; and an atmosphere that they felt excited to spend time in.

Referencing the client’s Scandinavian influenced interior we decided to continue this Scandi style theme outside. The paving and decking clad steps were replaced with a lovely grey sandstone. The rendered walls were both clad in cedar and painted in a gorgeous rich blue. A space saving bench was designed and built so that the client could sit directly outside and have space for a small table if required.

Upstairs there is a zinc multi-spouted water feature that provides an ambient soundscape to offset the noise of the city. The back cedar clad wall has climbers trained on wires to make a green wall. Large pots, lighting, irrigation, space for a fire pit, outdoor sofa and table were all considerations for this scheme.

The original retaining wall has been clad with the warm tones of cedar wood bringing a more naturalist vibe

Cedar cladding, grey sawn sandstone, bull-nosed steps, Stainless steel cables, Hunza lights.
